The Building Department is responsible for evaluating building plans, submitted for review and enforcing Building Code, as well as other City and County ordinances related to building such as Manufactured Home and Travel Trailer Regulations, Multi-Family Housing Regulations, Building and Construction Regulations, Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance, and Standards for Telecommunication Antennae and Towers. Permits are issued for buildings, HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning), plumbing and electrical work.
All permits relating to construction are issued from this department (i.e. building permits, electrical permits, plumbing permits, mechanical permits, mobile home permits, low voltage electrical installation permits, sprinkler installation permits, etc.). We also process requests for matters relating to zoning issues, subdivision requests, special permission requests, variance requests, tree removal requests, nuisance abatement.
In order to pull a permit, all contractors must have an "Occupational Tax Certificate" in the state of Georgia. Click here for the Occupational Tax form. In addition, contractors doing work that requires a state license must show proof of licensure before the permit will be issued.
Building Official Keith Pollock has completed a variety of certifications to better assist the City and County community: Level I Building Inspector, Level II Building Inspector, Level I Code Enforcement Officer, Certified Storm Water Inspector, Soil Erosion Inspector 1B, Soil Erosion 1A, Certified Police Chief, POST Certified Peace Officer, Certified Fire Fighter, and was also named the 2007 Decatur County Peace Officer of the Year.
